Rangiroa Island, situated 340km North East of Tahiti Island where the capital Papeete is located in the Tuamotu Archipelago, is known for its outstanding clear blue waters in all of Tahiti. The island is formed from over 240 small motus (islets) in the shape of a ring; from air, the coral atoll looks like a beautiful stringed necklace. A coral atoll is a coral reef that encircles a lagoon - its unique shape was caused as the volcano in the center sank beneath the ocean floor. Think of it as a beautiful coral ring, rather than an island, afloat in the tropical waters.
